Genetic Engineering and Biotechnology (GEB) is a multi disciplinary applied science subject that combines scientific and engineering principles with commercial considerations to develop and improve products and processes made from living systems. "Genetic Engineering and Biotechnology"- a new department in Jagannath University has been established in the year 2016, aiming at generating skilled manpower with good theoretical and practical background. The mission of this Department is to provide both practical and theoretical knowledge in the field of Genetics and Biotechnology keeping in view the challenge of the twenty first century. The department offers 30 seats in each batch every year. Only the top ranking students of the admission test get the opportunity of studying here. There are two batches running at present. A seminar library is established in this department.
The department currently offers four years (eight semesters) B.Sc program. In the B.Sc (Genetic Engineering and Biotechnology) course, comprehensive education in all aspects of modern genetic engineering and biotechnology is offered. The program combines theory and hands-on laboratory experience to the students. These include basic sciences such as biochemistry, microbiology, molecular biology, physiology and immunology and applied sciences such as industrial biotechnology, medical and pharmaceutical biotechnology and environmental biotechnology. The department has ten appointed dynamic faculty members skilled in molecular biology, plant genetics and breeding, industrial biotechnology and microbiology research.
There are currently research projects going on through national research grant programmes. We are aiming to develop collaborative research programmes between various interdisciplinary departments.  Our current and potential research developments in the broad areas are listed bellow
  • Sustainable energy and biofuel development: renewable energy from biomass and municipal waste.  Biophovoltaic device and microbial fuel cell.
  • Environmental toxicology: Environmental hazard assessment related to public health. Bioremediation of toxic products such as arsenic and lead.
  • Biopharmaceuticals: Isolation and identification of novel biopharmaceuticals from various medicinal plants and fungi and algae.
  • Emerging pathogens: with main focus in diarrhea causing viruses (Rota virus, Noro virus).
  • Bionanoparticle synthesis and its antimicrobial applications
  • Quality assurance and enhancement of various food products

  • To disseminate knowledge for enabling students to acquire specialized skills, competence and positive mind-set for rendering them employable in a wide range of career jobs
  • To develop state-of-the-art infrastructure with advanced research facilities to pursue research in cutting-age areas of biotechnology
  • To help every student to become technologically capable by providing them hands on training to enhance their ability to solve and formulate biotechnology related problems
  • To aware the students about the socio-ethical implications of biotechnology and make valued person to understand their responsibility to serve the society
  • To promote entrepreneurship for new innovations.
