Mathematics is not merely natural science nor it is simply a science rather imagine it as a “Meta-science”. In that regard, the mathematics lays out the conceptual framework of the natural world, in which we then recognize further using science. The techniques, methods, and philosophy of Mathematics are different from those of natural sciences. Technically, based on its techniques, mathematics is the most extreme of the humanities.

Mathematics is the structure of all creations, without which the world cannot move even an inch. We everyone use mathematics in our day-to-day life. Even insects use mathematics in their everyday life for existence. Snails make their shells, spiders design their webs, and bees build hexagonal combs. There are innumerable examples of mathematical patterns in natural fabric. Mathematics offers rationality to our thoughts. It is a tool in our hands to make our life simpler and easier.

The Department of Mathematics at Jagannath University started its academic activities with its independent curriculum since 2005. At present, the department has twenty five qualified and proactive faculty members consisting of 7 Professors, 5 Associate Professors, 9 Assistant Professors and 4 Lecturers contributing in teaching and research. Among these faculty members thirteen of them are holding Ph.D. degrees from the reputed universities of different parts of home and abroad, and two of them are pursuing their Ph.D. in the different reputed universities in abroad.

Department of Mathematics is one of the prevalent and rich departments of Jagannath University, Dhaka. It offers Bachelor of Science (B.Sc), Master of Science (M.Sc), Master of Philosophy (M.Phil) and Doctor of Philosophy (Ph.D) degrees. Courses for the undergraduate level extends over four academic years and are divided into 8(Eight) semesters while the Master of Science (M.Sc) degree is of one year consisting of 2(two) semesters in compliance to the University Rules and Regulations. The course of study is an integrated one carrying a total of 147 Credits effective for 2019-20 session.
