Biographical Note

Md. Aminul Islam has been working as an Associate Professor in the Department of Sociology, Jagannath University, Dhaka, Bangladesh. Earlier he served as a Lecturer and as an Assistant Professor in the same Department at the University. Previously he worked as a Research Assistant in several research projects after completing undergraduate and post graduate degrees. He has contributed in writing several research reports in different aspects of social problems. Mr. Islam has received his BSS with Honours and MSS in Sociology from the University of Dhaka, Bangladesh. He has also received his second Masters in Sociology focusing on criminology from the University of Manitoba, Winnipeg, Canada. The second MA has helped him in enhancing understanding the underlying causes of crime and deviance as well as other social problems both in the Western and the Third World countries. Moreover, he received an intensive quantitative research methodological training by doing a Thesis on “Perceived Discrimination among Immigrants to Canada: Examining Some Socio-demographic Characteristics.”Besides, he has achieved a six months post graduate diploma in Disaster Management and Vulnerability Studies from the Institute of Disaster Management and Vulnerable Studies, University of Dhaka, Bangladesh. His area of academic interests includes: Criminological & contemporary sociological theories, Crime and Deviance, Survey & qualitative methods, Social Statistics, Migration studies, Disability studies, Disaster and vulnerability studies, Poverty and Social inequality & rural development as well as development policy. He has written and published many research articles in different peer reviewed journals. Furthermore, he has participated different national and international seminars/conferences for enhancing knowledge on various social issues. In addition, he has achieved training on advanced research methodology and Statistical Package for the Social Sciences (SPSS) during his academic career. In future, he has a keen interest in exploring the underlying causes of some social problems/crimes in Bangladesh and suggesting pragmatic policy recommendations so that crime and deviance can be prevented or reduced at a satisfactory level.

Crime and Deviance, Migration studies, Disability studies, Disaster and vulnerability studies, Poverty and Social inequality & rural development as well as development policy.

Master of Arts (MA) in Sociology (Graduated in Feb. 2019), University of Manitoba, Canada. (Thesis based on quantitative data analysis: “Perceived Discrimination Among Immigrants to Canada: Examining Some Socio-demographic Factors”)

Master of Social Sciences (M.S.S) (2004, Exam held in 2006), University of Dhaka, Bangladesh. Sociology (Major), Result: 1st class 1st position (secured 70% marks, the scale was: first class 60% and above). (Thesis based on both quantitative and qualitative data analysis: “The Socio-economic and Health Condition of Disabled People in Urban Bangladesh: A Study in Dhaka City”)

  • Have completed Post Graduate Diploma in Disaster Management (six- month’s diploma) in June 2015 at the Institute of Disaster Management & Vulnerability Studies, University of Dhaka.
  • Have participated and successfully completed the ‘Professional Training on Disaster Management’ (one week) organized by the Department of Sociology, University of Dhaka.
  • Have successfully completed 40 hours training course on SPSS and Applied Statistics organized by the Institute of Statistical Research and Training (ISRT), University of Dhaka, from May 28, 2013 – June 23, 2013.
  • Have successfully completed the training program on ‘Research Methodology for Social Sciences’ organized by the Faculty of Social Sciences, Jagannath University under the University Development Project from April 01- 05, 2012.

RESEARCH PROJECTS:

  1. Doing a research project funded by Jagannath University on "Parents’ Perception towards the Negative Impacts of Smartphone and Internet Use on their  Children’s Academic Performance and Mental Health: A Cross-sectional Study in Dhaka."
  2. Accomplished research funded by Jagannath University on “Examining the Impacts of Low Self-control and Internet Use and Social Network Habits on Cyberbullying Perpetration among Bangladeshi Undergraduate Students: An Exploratory Study.” This one is also a small-scale research restricted to the students of Jagannath University only. I am unable to include other university students as samples because of the shortage of funds.
  3. Done a small-scale research that was funded by Jagannath University in 2021 on “Cyberbullying and Its Impact on University Students.” It is a small-scale research restricted to the students of Jagannath University only as funds are scarce; I am unable to include other university students.

RESEARCH & THESIS:

  • Done a Master's thesis on “Perceived Discrimination against Immigrants to Canada: Examining Some Socio-demographic Factors”, Department of Sociology, University of Manitoba, Canada.
  • Done a mandatory quantitative research independently on “The Influence of Discrimination amongst Immigrant People on level of Confidence in Institutions in Canada” for the partial fulfillment of the course titled “Survey Research Methods,” Dept. of Sociology, University of Manitoba, Canada.
  • Done another mandatory qualitative research independently on “Trustworthiness of Local Police in Canada: An Interpretation from Immigrant’s Lived Experience” for the partial fulfillment of the course titled “Qualitative Research Methods,” Dept. of Sociology, University of Manitoba, Canada.
  • Done another practice based research independently under the course titled “Qualitative Research Methods,” Dept. of Sociology, University of Manitoba, on how to develop broad as well as sub-codes based on a 27 pages long interview transcript regarding views on the responsibility of old aged people’s care giving and reordered the data and eventually identified some separate important broad themes and sub-themes. Later, I wrote a research paper by analyzing those thematically.

ACADEMIC RESPONSIBILITIES:

Courses Taught at Under Graduate Level: I have now been teaching some undergraduate courses, such as, Advanced Social Statistics, Applied research Methodology, and Introduction to Sociology/Bangladesh Studies. Earlier, I taught some other courses including Classical Sociological Theories, Contemporary Bangladesh Society & Culture, World Civilization, Sociology of Development as well as Crime and Deviance.

Course Taught at Graduate Level: At present, I have been teaching a course at the Master’s level viz. Social Policy & Development. Earlier, I taught two other courses entitled ‘Contemporary Sociological Theories,’ and ‘Sociology of Consumption.’

RESEARCH MONOGRAPH & THESIS SUPERVISION:

I have supervised at least 30 students’ research monographs at the undergraduate level and 05 theses at the graduate level during my teaching career.

 

SKILLS

  • Computer Literacy: Have fresh idea on Microsoft word, Microsoft Excel, Microsoft Power Point, Internet browsing, and SPSS software.
  • Language: Fluent in written and spoken English and Bengali.
  • Have obtained an overall band score 7.0 in the IELTS exam under the British Council, Dhaka.

Seminar Attended: Have attended different seminars related to poverty, criminology & criminal justice, migration/immigration, trafficking, climate change and disaster management.
