Biography of Syeda Tasneem Towhid, Ph.D

I completed my Bachelor of Science (B.Sc.) and Master of Science (MS) from Department of Microbiology, University of Dhaka. 

 

I did a small project in 2006 on characterization of alpha-amylase from Streptomyces halidee in Lab 224 under the supervision of Prof. Dr. M. Mahfuzul Haque . My MS thesis was on detection of uidA from freshwater isolates of Escherichia coli in Lab 206, supervised by Prof. Humaira Akhter.  The MS thesis was funded by the NUFU project from Norway, in collaboration with Prof. Nils-Kare Birkeland. 

 

I joined the Department of Microbiology,Gono University, Savar, as a lecturer, where I taught medical microbiology and diagnostic microbiology in 2008.  I entered doctoral research in the Institute of Physiology, Eberhard Karl Universitaet Tuebingen, Germany in 2009. I worked under Prof. Florian Lang on the regulation of activation and apototic signaling in human platelets in relation to vascular diseases. I completed my doctoral research in 2012 and returned to Bangladesh. 

 

I joined the ICDDR,B in Dhaka, Bangladesh and was involved in national surveillance of Dengue, Chikungunya. 

I started teaching in my current position in the Department of Microbiology, Jagannath University, Dhaka in 2016. I teach General Microbiology, Medical Microbiology, Medical Genetics and Immunopathology. 

 

I supervise 2 project students from undergraduate studies and 2 students from MS thesis each year. My projects focus on assessment of anti-microbial resistance in hospital environment. Students are advised to contact me during open calls.
