About Department of Bangla
Jagannath University is one of the pioneer institutions in the education sector of Bangladesh Government. Jagannath College (presently Jagannath University ) was first established on 4th July 1884 in the name of Sri Jagannath Roy Chowdhury by his son Sri Kishoree Lal Roy Chowdhury, the Zamindar of Baliati, Saturia, Manikgonj.
Till 1951, Jagannath College was one of the two Colleges where Bengali was taught as an additional subject. Since then, the activities of the Bengali Department was limited to teaching compulsory Bengali at Higher Secondary and as an additional subject at Degree levels , Between 1972-73 the College opened Honors and Master's courses and became of the pioneer institutions of the country in teaching Bangla.
In 1952, at the time of the great language movement, Professor Ajit Kumar Guh, eminent educationist and cultural personality, was the Head of this Department. Students of the department played significant role in the movement. The college was declared as a government institution on 1st August, 1968. The Department, executing the decision of the authority, stopped teaching H.S.C and Degree courses since 1982 and 1992 respectively. Since then Department of Bangla has been conducting Honors and Master's Courses.
The teachers and students of Jagannath University Bangla Department have made a glorious contribution to the development of Bengali language and culture and the independence of Bangladesh. Mofazzal Haider Chowdhury, Munir Chowdhury, Abdul Qadir, Alauddin Al Azad, Abul Kashem Chowdhury, Hasan Hafizur Rahman, Shaukat Ali, Akhtaruzzaman Ilyas, Mamtazuddin Ahmad, Hayat Mamud, Rahat Khan, Shamsuzzaman Khan and many other accomplished and knowledgeable teachers served to this Department. Their literary and intellectual contribution enlightened them with the light of knowledge, wisdom and talent.
