Message from the Chairman
Welcome to the Department of Chemistry
Chemistry is a basic and central science which have strong interaction with other branches like biology, medicine, materials, engineering, environmental sciences, physics, and mathematics. The Chemistry Department of Jagannath University is one of the leading and largest teaching and research Departments which is composed of a dynamic community of researchers who are creating and disseminating new knowledge at the forefront of all to correlate with other branches.
Most of our faculty members have Ph. D and Postdoc research experiences from overseas. Chemistry as an enabling science, it needs to overcome every important modern societal challenge as being in focal point. Our 28 faculty members and students engage these challenges daily on a local, national, and international scale. To do so, our department provides the opportunity for the students to obtain a thorough fundamental knowledge of various fields of chemistry such as organic chemistry, inorganic chemistry, physical chemistry, analytical chemistry, biochemistry and theoretical chemistry. This is done by the close student-faculty interactions.
The caring and supportive attitude of faculty members creates confidence and enthusiasm in the students to reach where they aspire to be. So far, several hundreds of Chemists have been graduated from this department and playing a vital role in the development and improvement of various administrative and educational organizations and also chemical, pharmaceutical and allied industries both at home and abroad.
Our department offers a four-yearintegrated degree of B. Sc. (Honours) in Chemistry with the provision for doing major and minor in various fields such as Analytical, Inorganic, Organic, Physical, Environmental, Medicinal, Nuclear, Applied, Pharmaceutical & Bio-chemistry, Quantum Mechanics and Spectroscopy, Physics, andMathematics. Besides this, the Department offers M.S., M. Phil and Ph.D. degrees through taught courses and a dissertation/thesis based on supervised and published researches in all branches of Chemistry. The department’s deep expertise in organic, inorganic, physical, medicinal, theoretical/computational, life-science related, materials chemistry and catalysis attract talented students and researchers from all over the world.
We encourage you to plan a visit to our department.
About Department of Chemistry
Department of Chemistry is one of the most active disciplines under the faculty of Science and offers relevant courses to produce highly skilled graduates with theoretical and well equipped practical knowledge. It is becoming gradually popular among the students all over the country dreaming for the higher study in the Dhaka city. There are twenty eight qualified and proactive faculty members in the department contributing in teaching and research. Among these faculty members fifteen of them are holding Ph.D. degree from the reputed universities of different parts of the globe such as UK, Germany, China, Japan and South Korea and four of them are pursuing their Ph.D. in the different universities of the world.
Since the beginning of Jagannath University in 2005, the students of four batches have already got their B.Sc. (Hons) and M.Sc. and the students of two batches have completed their B.Sc. (Hons) degree in chemistry. As a new-born university the Department of Chemistry is going nicely in terms of academic and research activities despite of the limitations regarding the classroom and laboratory facilities. However, an Advance Instrument Centre decorated with some analytical key instruments e.g., UV-Visible Spectrophotometer, Fourier Transform Infra Red Spectrophotometer, Rotary Evaporator, Magnetic Susceptibility Balance etc.) has recently been established at our department by implementing the Window-1 sub-project for the institutional development under the HEQEP project funded by the World Bank. This will serve the basic needs of our general and research students.
Vision
The Department of Chemistry at Jagannath University strives to be an internationally recognized center of excellence in teaching and research. To achieve this vision the department is committed to provide courses of study for undergraduate and graduate level in the chemical sciences which combines curriculum, scope of scholarships and service engagement opportunities that are high quality innovative and intellectually challenging.
Mission
The Department of Chemistry at Jagannath University is devoted to pursuit quality education through active learning process and fosters personal and intellectual growth to prepare students for dynamic carriers, meaningful lives, and responsible citizen of Bangladesh as well as global context.
Programs
Department of Chemistry is one of the most prestigious discipline under the faculty of Science and offers relevant courses to produce highly skilled graduates with theoretical and well equipped practical knowledge. Courses of study for a Bachelor of Science (Honours) degree in Chemistry shall extend over a period of 4 (four) academic years and each academic year shall be divided into 2 (two) semesters. As a result the whole courses of study shall be divided into 8 (eight) semesters. A Semester is conducted for a period of 6 (six) months named as 1st Semester and 2nd Semester in each academic year. Examinations shall be held at the end of each semester.
A student of Bachelor’s programme in Chemistry has to conduct all 61 (sixty one) courses (137 credits) listed in syllabus. Of the 61 courses, there will have 45 (forty five) theoretical courses (109 credits), 12 (twelve) practical courses (24 credits), and 4 (four) viva-voce courses (4 credits). Among the courses offered, a student has to conduct a total of 5 (five) courses (10 credits) related to Physics and 8 courses (16 credits) related to Mathematics and one English courses (3 credits) as integrated course.
Assignment of Credits:
Theoretical Courses: A 3 credits course will involve three lecture hours per week
(a total of 45 lecture hours) and a 2 credits course will involve two lecture hours per week (a total of 30 lecture hours).
Practical Course: In case of practical/lab course, there shall be at least four (04) contact hours for two (02) credit points in a week. As a result, there shall be at least 60 contact hours for two (02) credit points practical/lab course throughout the Semester.
Marks Distribution: Of the total marks in a theoretical or a practical course, 70% will be from the written/ practical examination to be held at the end of the course as final examination and 30% as continuous assessment. Among the 30% marks of continuous assessment for Theoretical courses, 67% are allocated for two mid-semester examination and 33% are allocated for class attendance. On the other hand, among the 30% marks of continuous assessment for Practical courses, 67% are allocated for participation and performance/Oral test/Assignment/Oral/Written test on Laboratory Work/Field Work/Internship/Project/Research and 33% are allocated for class attendance.
