Message from the Chairman
Welcome to the Department of Sociology
As the Chairperson, it is my privilege to lead a department committed to understanding the complex social structures that shape our world and fostering an environment where critical thinking, rigorous research, and compassionate engagement thrive. Our department prides itself on a diverse and inclusive community of scholars, educators, and students.
We believe that the study of sociology is more than just an academic pursuit; it is a vital tool for addressing some of society’s most pressing challenges. From social inequality and justice to the impacts of globalization and technological change, our work aims to illuminate the forces that influence human behavior and societal development.
Despite some limitations in terms of logistic support and accommodation, our faculty members strive to prepare our students for professional careers in various fields, both nationally and internationally, equipped with sociological knowledge. Alongside our undergraduate and graduate programs, the department currently offers Doctor of Philosophy (PhD) and Master of Philosophy (M.Phil) degrees. The Department plays a vital role within the University and beyond and is well-known for the timely completion of semesters and a student-friendly environment. With the combined efforts of our faculty, administrative staff, and students, I am confident that the department will reach the peak of academic excellence in the coming days.
Thank you for visiting our department. We hope you find it an excellent place for the production and dissemination of knowledge.
About Department of Sociology
According to Greek philosopher Aristotle, "Man is by nature a social animal; an individual who is unsocial naturally and not accidentally is either animal or more than human”. Therefore, we cannot imagine humans without society or vice versa. As a social being, people are born, grow, thrive, and survive in a society. Accordingly, people’s hopes and aspirations, institutions, and organizations are shaped based on the society, where they interact with their surroundings for their everyday interests. Sociology is the scientific study of society and institutions, human behaviors, and interactions; thus, it is dedicated to exploring the complexities of human societies, delving into the structures, behaviors, and dynamics that shape our world. Sociology as an independent discipline commenced its journey in Bangladesh in 1957 from the University of Dhaka. After that, the University of Rajshahi and the University of Chittagong launched the Department of Sociology in 1969 and 1970 respectively.
Jagannath University was established in 2005, and the Department of Sociology was one of the pioneering departments of the university, providing higher education under the semester system. Since its inception, this department has tried to provide a comprehensive education in sociology, equipping our students with the analytical tools and critical thinking skills necessary to navigate the ever-changing landscape of society. Through cutting-edge research, impactful teaching, pedagogical innovations, and community engagement, the department aims to foster a spirit of research, teaching, and providing work-ready graduates for the labour market through a broader lens, a commitment to social justice. This department has been accepting 110 students for a four-year honours program and a one-year master's program through a national-level admission test from the academic year 2005-06. However, the number of enrolled students was reduced to 86 for the sake of convenience in the management of the semester system. Currently, there are 344 students at the honours level from different sessions and 86 master’s level students in the department. In 2015, the department launched the M.Phil. and Ph.D. program; currently, two MPhil researchers are conducting their research with this department. This department has a diverse and dynamic community of scholars, including 21 faculty members (six professors, five associate professors, and ten assistant professors), who are committed to unraveling society’s intricacies to foster a deeper understanding of the social forces that influence individuals, communities, and institutions.
