DEPARTMENT OF STATISTICS

Message from the Chairman

Welcome to the Department of Statistics

The Department of Statistics, Jagannath University began its function in the year 1964, chaired by Professor Khodadad Khan. Others were Prof. Dr. Md. Abdul Kuddus, Prof. AbdusSamad Patoary, and Prof. Md. Nurul Islam and so on. It had also run courses for night shift students in 1968. Earlier, it started activities in the Higher Secondary and Bachelor of Degree Level. In the year 1973, it introduced B.Sc. (Honors) course which was ultimately followed by the introduction of Masters Course.

The Jagannath College was transformed into the Jagannath University in 2005 by Jagannath University Act 2005. However, the evening shift of the department merged with the day shift students soon after launching curriculum of the university.

At present, the department operates courses for Four Years B.Sc. Honors, One Year M.Sc., Two Years M. Phil. and Three Years Ph. D. Degree. Honors Course is comprised of 8 (eight) semesters each of which is 6 (six) months duration. The courses (major and related) offered for graduate level are compulsory for the students. The marks for each unit (3 credits) are distributed like 70% for semester final, 20% for midterm /quiz, 10% for class performance and attendance. Besides, it conducts minor courses of statistics for various departments under the Faculties of Science and Business Studies. There are 21 full time faculties and 11 supporting staff . The number of students is about 450 students in this department.

As an integral part of the curriculum, research work is carried out in the Masters level, M Phil and Ph. D. However, in order to maintain good advancement of knowledge, several activities like tutorials, in-course exams. Excursions, laboratory sessions are being arranged regularly.

Our vision is to boost our reputation as well-known teaching and research institution which is recognised for its excellence and invention, and attracts the best students from home and abroad.
