Biography of Dr Syeda Ishrat Najia

 

I am pursuing my academic and professional career in Urban Geography with especial interest in urban development, urban land use, urban poverty, urban management and urban women. I have been teaching Urban Geography, Geography of Urban Development in Bangladesh in graduate level and Urban Development Planning and Urban Landuse and Land Management in post graduate level for the last eight years.  I have fairly good experience as an urban researcher. I received my B.Sc (Hons.), M.Sc and M.Phil Degrees in Geography and Environment from the University of Dhaka, Bangladesh. I did a Post Graduate Diploma in Urban Management Development Theory (UMDT) from IHS, Erasmus University, Rotterdam, the Netherlands in 2014 under Netherlands Fellowship Programme. Currently I am doing my PhD on Urban Poverty Alleviation in Bangladesh: An Evaluation of Strategies and Programmes, at the University of Dhaka, Bangladesh.

I have experience of conducting three basic researches under the supervision of eminent urban expert of Bangladesh Professor Nazrul Islam. My M.Sc. thesis was on “Urban Development Pattern and Process of Faridpur Town (1947-2001)”, and my M.Phil thesis was on “Urban Landuse Structure of Bangladesh: In Search of a Model”. I also did a research on “The Role of GO and NGOs in Urban Poverty Alleviation: A Case Study of Faridpur Town” under the fellowship of the Social Science Research Council (SSRC), Planning Commission, Ministry of Planning, Government of Bangladesh and conducted another research on “Study on Health Hazards among the Tobacco Curing Workers of Bangladesh” with funding support from the John Hops kin University of USA.

I am affiliated with a number of professional bodies. Currently I am an elected Joint Secretary of Centre for Urban Studies (CUS), Dhaka,  Alumni Association Department of Geography and Environment, University of Dhaka and Bangladesh Geographical Society (BGS) and also  a Council Member of United Nations Association of Bangladesh (UNAB). I am  a life member of Bangladesh National Geographical Association (BNGA), Bangladesh Poribesh Andolon (BAPA), Bangladesh Regional Science Association of Bangladesh (BRSA) and IHS Alumni, Rotterdam, the Netherlands  and general member of Asiatic Society of Bangladesh (ASB).
