Biography of Prof. Dr. Md. Atiqul Islam


Dr. Md. Atiqul Islam was born in Pabna, Bangladesh, where he obtained secondary and higher secondary school certificates accredited by Santhia Pilot High School and Govt. Edward College. Next, he studied Bachelor of Science (B.Sc.) and Master of Science (M.Sc.) programs in Statistics at the Department of Statistics, Shahjalal University of Science and Technology (SUST), Sylhet, Bangladesh. He secured first position in both programs. After graduating as a statistician, he was appointed as a young academic lecturer at the same department. Later in 2009, he received VLIR-UOS awards scholarships from Flemish Government to pursue Master in Biostatistics at the Center for Statistics (CenStat), Hasselt University, Belgium. In 2011, he obtained his second Master in Biostatistics/ICP. In 2017, Dr. Islam was awarded his PhD in Medical Statistics and Epidemiology from University Medical Center Groninegn (UMCG), University of Groningen, the Netherlands. During the PhD trajectory, he explored the heterogeneity in cognitive functioning and clinical symptoms in people with psychotic disorders and their unaffected siblings under Genetic Risk and Outcome of Psychosis (GROUP) project. 

Currently, Dr. Islam is working as a Professor of the Department of Statistics, Jagannath University (JnU), Dhaka. Before joining at JnU, he was affiliated as an Associate Professor of the Department of Statistics, Shahjalal University of Science and Technology (SUST), Sylhet-3114, Bangladesh. Dr. Islam does research in multi-level modelling and trajectory analysis for clustered and longitudinal data. His current project is 'Heterogeneity and the impact of depression on health-related quality of life among T2D patients in Bangladesh'.
