Biography of Professor Dr. Sukumar Bepary

Dr. Sukumar Bepary is working as an Associate Professor in the Department of Pharmacy of Jagannath University, Dhaka, Bangladesh. He received his B. Pharm. (Hons) and M. Pharm. degrees from the University of Dhaka. Latter he has completed the M.B.A from the Institute of Business Administration (IBA) of Dhaka University. As the Higher education, Dr. Sukumar has completed the Ph. D. program from Pai Chai University located in Daejeon, South Korea. During the Ph. D. Program, he was attached with the Korea Research Institute of Chemical Technology (KRICT), which is one of the few best Government research institutes of South Korea. Throughout the Ph. D. Program he has worked in the Medicinal Chemistry division of that Institute. Additionally, after receiving the Ph. D. award, he was also employed as a Post-Doctoral Reseach Fellow in the same institute for approximately additional three years.

Being a Doctoral and then Post-Doctoral research fellow, Dr. Sukumar was involved in developing novel therapeutic agent. The major targeted area was development of novel selective small molecule inhibitors against the various isoforms of the PI3 Kinase enzymes. This enzyme is now the prime target for the development of anticancer drugs, chronic asthma and rheumatoid arthritis. Being a regular and sincere researcher, he has synthesized hundreds of final compounds through multistep reactions during his 7-year Ph. D. and Post-Doctoral research activities. His team has experiences of the patent selling to one reputed Pharmaceuticals in South Korea and the scaffold in now further being progressed for clinical development. As the second project he has worked for the development of inhibitors for the BACE1 enzyme for treating the Alzheimer’s Disease. He has also experience of working with another large group who worked for the development of insecticide under using green chemistry.

Dr. Sukumar has run a lot of important activities crucial and usual for drug design and development. Starting from the selection of the required route of synthesis, he has experience of searching the necessary chemicals and reagents, running the multistep-reactions, monitoring the reaction progress by using various techniques, separating and purifying the targeted compounds using column chromatography or HPLC, characterizing of the compounds by proton and/or carbon NMR and also sometimes by mass spectroscopy. After the biological evaluations, Dr. Sukumar has performed the subsequent molecular docking studies to find out the binding modes along with necessary development action. Thus the drug developments were progressed.

Dr. Sukumar has received some research grants for his research and the projects are now being run in the Department of Pharmacy of Jagannath University. Because of the long experiences, Dr. Sukumar has publications is some reputed journals including Bioorganic Medicinal Chemistry Letters (BMCL), European Journal of Organic Chemistry (EurJOC), Synthetic Communications (Syn Com) and Bulletin of Korean Chemical Society (BKCS).
