Biography of Professor Dr. Sukumar Bepary
Prof. Dr. Sukumar Bepary is a regular Faculty Member of the Department of Pharmacy of Jagannath University, Dhaka, Bangladesh. He received his B. Pharm. (Hons) and M. Pharm. degrees from the University of Dhaka. Latter he has completed the M.B.A from the Institute of Business Administration (IBA) of Dhaka University. Dr. Sukumar Bepary has completed his Ph.D. program from Pai Chai University located in Daejeon, South Korea. During the Ph.D. Program. For his research works, he was in the Korea Research Institute of Chemical Technology (KRICT), which is one of the few best Government research institutes of South Korea. Throughout the Ph.D. Program he has worked in the Medicinal Chemistry division of that Institute. Additionally, after receiving the Ph.D. award, he was also employed as a Post-Doctoral Research Fellow in the same institute for approximately additional three years.
Being a Doctoral and then Post-Doctoral research fellow, Prof. Dr. Sukumar was involved in developing novel therapeutic agent. The major targeted area was development of novel selective small molecule inhibitors against the various isoforms of the PI3 Kinase enzymes, which is a prime target for developing drugs against cancer, chronic asthma and rheumatoid arthritis. Being a regular researcher, he has synthesized hundreds of final compounds through multistep reactions during his 7-year Ph.D. and Post-Doctoral research activities. His team has experiences of the patent selling to one reputed Pharmaceuticals in South Korea and the scaffold in now further being progressed for clinical development. As the second project he has worked for the development of inhibitors for the BACE1 enzyme for treating the Alzheimer’s Disease. He has also worked with another large group who worked for the development of insecticide through green chemistry.
At present, Prof. Dr. Sukumar Bepary is running multiple projects funded by Jagannath University, Ministry of Education of Bangladesh and University Grants Commission of Bangladesh. The project as focusing on development of antiinflammatory activities in his personal Medicinal Chemistry Laboratory in the Department of Pharmacy of Jagannath University, Dhaka, Bangladesh.
Prof. Dr. Sukumar has run a lot of important activities crucial and usual for drug design and development. He is experienced in running the multistep-reactions, monitoring the reaction progress by using various techniques, separating and purifying the targeted compounds using column chromatography or HPLC, characterizing of the compounds by proton and/or carbon NMR and mass spectroscopy. After the biological evaluations, Prof. Sukumar has performed the subsequent molecular docking studies to find out the binding modes along with necessary development action to make sure rapid progress of drug developments program.
Because of the long experiences, Prof. Dr. Sukumar has publications is some reputed international journals including, Bioorganic Medicinal Chemistry Letters (BMCL), European Journal of Organic Chemistry (EurJOC), Synthetic Communications (Syn Com) and Bulletin of Korean Chemical Society (BKCS), Thai Journal of Pharmaceutical Sciences (TJPS), Indonesian Journal of Pure and Applied Chemistry (IJPAC), Cylon Journal of Science (CJS), etc.
Currently Prof. Dr. Sukumar Bepary is supervising his Ph.D. student, M.Phil. students, M.Pharm. (Thesis) students for the research works in his laboratory. He is also supervising project students from the B.Pharm. program of his department.
Prof. Dr. Sukumar Bepary has also played important roles in Institutional Quality Assurance Cell (IQAC) of Jagannath University. Thus he also coordinated the departmental academic development programs, like, OBE-based Curriculum Development for the B.Pharm. and M.Pharm. Programs.
