Short Biography

Al-Hakim was born in a small beautiful village of Bangladesh which is Nobogram under the ancient historic district namely, Noakhali. He is the second son of Mr. Mohammad Ali and Mrs. Minara Begum. He accomplished his Secondary (SSC) and Higher Secondary (HSC) from Noakhali Zilla School and Noakhali Government College, respectively which are the reputed institutions in Bangladesh. Then he got admitted into the Department of Genetic Engineering and Biotechnology at Shahjalal University of Science and Technology, which is the first science and technology university in Bangladesh where cutting-edge research are conducted by the notable professors. Hakim was very much enthusiastic to learn about the different aspects of genetics, and so he obtained B.Sc. and MS (Thesis) successfully with securing the highest grade among his batch. He completed his B.Sc. project work and MS Thesis entitled on “Molecular identification of protease producing bacterial isolates and partial purification and characterization of their alkaline serine protease produced with organic municipal solid wastes” under the direct supervision of Professor Dr. Md. Abul Kalam Azad, founding Chairman, Department of Genetic Engineering & Biotechnology, Shahjalal University of Science and Technology, Sylhet-3114, Bangladesh. His tremendous efforts helped him to acquire the 1st position in MS and 2nd position in B.Sc. in the respective Department as well as in the Faculty of Life Sciences. After that, he started his career as a Research Officer at Mucosal Immunology and Vaccinology Laboratory, International Center for Diarrhoeal Disease Research, Bangladesh (icddr,b), which is a world-famous research organization for its innovation. During the tenure at icddr,b, he had the opportunity to work under the supervision of Dr. Firdausi Qadri, who is a famous immunologist not only in Bangladesh but also in the international scientific arena. He worked on different projects of understanding the systemic and innate immune responses in enteric infections, including Vibrio cholerae and enterotoxigenic Escherichia coli, which are the prime causes of severe diarrhea and other enteric diseases in Bangladesh. Besides this, he worked on oral cholera vaccines projects which were related to the evaluation of vaccine safety and efficacy among the Bangladeshi participants. From the COVID-19 pandemic, he was involved in several research projects including “Antibody responses after COVID-19 infection in patients who are mildly symptomatic or asymptomatic in Bangladesh” and “Correlates of protection of COVID-19 immunology study”.

After four years’ services at icddr,b, he joined as a Lecturer in the Department of Genetic Engineering and Biotechnology at Jagannath University, Bangladesh on 07th March, 2021. Currently, he is doing research on genome-wide analysis and structural basis for transmembrane transport selectivity profiles of aquaporins in plants and plant pathogens. His great passion made it possible to publish more than 20 scientific research and review articles including one book chapter in international peer reviewed journals with high impact factors, including Frontiers in Immunology, Frontiers in Microbiology, Frontiers in Genetics, Springer Nature, Plos Neglected and Tropical Diseases, Elsevier and Taylor & Francis publishing journals. He is an active member of several scientific societies including Bangladesh Associations of Biotechnology Graduates (BABG), Network of Young Biotechnologists of Bangladesh (NyBB), Asian Federation of Biotechnology (AFOB), American Society for Microbiology (ASM), and Global Networks of Bangladeshi Biotechnologists (GNOBB).
