About Institute of Modern Languages
Institute of Modern Languages (IML) was established in 2015 by the 34th meeting of the Academic Council and 68th meeting of the Syndicate of Jagannath University as a constituent institution with a separate Board of Governors. The institution functions under the executive and academic authorities of the Syndicate and the Academic Council of the University.
Currently, the institute offers two programs— BA (Honours) in English Language and MA in English Language Teaching. The BA programme mostly concentrates on the study of English language, linguistics and English language teaching. The students also adequately learn about English literature through various courses. With a view to ensuring holistic development of the graduates, courses like Language, Media and Communication, Translation and Interpretation, Research Methodology and Public Speaking are also offered in this programme. It is even mandatory for the BA students to complete two courses on French language. At the end of the undergraduate programme, students submit a research project that provides ample opportunities for applying their earned knowledge in practical endeavours. Similarly, the MA programme in English Language Teaching consists of some outstanding courses that not only equip the learners with pedagogical skills, but also broaden their critical insights on language teaching policies and practices. Apart from these two programmes, certificate and diploma courses on Spanish, Chinese, French, English and Arabic are under the process to be introduced soon.
