Welcome to the Department of Political Science
Dear Faculty, Students, and Friends,
It is my great pleasure to welcome you to the Department of Political Science. Whether you are a current member of our academic community, a prospective student, or an interested visitor, we are delighted to have you engage with us.
The department of Political Science is a dynamic study field that explores the foundations of state, political institutions, governance, and the behavior of political actors, that shape our modern-day political world. Our department is committed to academic excellence and fostering an environment of critical inquiry by exploring diverse perspectives.
Our teaching staffs bring a wide range of expertise and are deeply engaged in both academic research and teaching. From political theory and public policy to international relations and comparative politics and governance, we offer an inter-disciplinary curriculum designed to help students understand and address the complex political challenges of our time.
We are proud of our graduates, who go on to become policymakers, scholars, informed citizens, and leaders in a wide array of practice fields. I encourage you to explore our courses, participate in our academic events, and connect with our vibrant research community.

About Department of Political Science
The Department of Political Science is as old as the foundation of Jagannath College in the 19th century. However, it became part of a full-fledged public university in 2005, when the government of Bangladesh passed the University Act 28 of 2005 in the parliament. Since then, the Department of Political Science started functioning as a separate academic branch of the Faculty of Social Sciences of Jagannath University.
The transformation from College to University brought many changes in the structure of the department. The university administration started recruiting top-class graduates of political science from different public universities in Bangladesh. As of now, the department is home to nineteen talented and academically engaged faculty members in various positions. There are six office staffs supporting the administrative work of the department.
Our department is committed to contributing to academic excellence through teaching and research. Many of the faculty members have already received higher education from abroad in different sub-disciplines of Political Science including International Relations, Governance and development, Local Government, and Public Policy, to mention a few. Apart from regular teaching responsibility, the faculty members conduct academic research on cutting-edge topics in Political Science. Besides, they take part regularly in scientific exchange through conferences, seminars, and workshops organized at both home and abroad. With all its activities related to scholarship and academic development, the department has become one of the excellent places of studying Political Science in Bangladesh.
The department offers four years of Bachelor degree and one year Master degree in Political Science. We provide a rich curriculum to students and continue to revise it as time demands. As such we keep our students updated about not only the basics of political science knowledge but also the changing knowledge landscape. At the Bachelor level, students are trained and taught core courses selecting from a range of subjects of Social Science disciplines. The Master degree is divided into both coursework and Thesis work. The department offers programmes focused on advanced research such as MPhil and PhD. In this way, we help our students to grow scholarly and prepare them to contribute to the intellectual domain.
Our department also provides students with many opportunities beyond class-based learning. The department highly promotes co-curricular activities throughout the year. Students are active in activities such as debating, and academic reading circles. With the support of the department, students organize sports event, study visit, and orientation programme for freshers. All these initiatives reflect department’s commitment to upholding an excellent academic-friendly environment for pursuing a degree in Political Science.
The department is proud of its alumni. Many former students have taken up successful careers in both government and non-government organizations. Many student graduates have found academic opportunities to study abroad. The alumni of this department are to be found in the academic position at different universities in Bangladesh. They are also successful in business, advocacy, in the media sector, as well as national politics. We hope that the department of political science will continue to provide services for quality higher education in Bangladesh.
